The Impact of Global Warming on the Poor and Vulnerable in Nigeria

More than a century of burning fossil fuels has led to global warming of 1.1°C above pre-industrial levels. This has resulted in more frequent and more intense extreme weather events, such as heat waves, droughts, floods, and wildfires. These events have caused increasingly dangerous impacts on nature and people in every region of the world, including Nigeria.

The poor and vulnerable in Nigeria are disproportionately affected by climate change. They are more likely to live in areas that are at risk of extreme weather events, and they have fewer resources to cope with the impacts of climate change. For example, a study by the World Bank found that the poorest 20% of Nigeria's population will experience 80% of the impacts of climate change.

The impacts of climate change are also felt differently by men and women in Nigeria. Women are more likely to be responsible for household chores and childcare, which makes them more vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, such as water scarcity and food insecurity. A study by Oxfam found that climate change could push an additional 250 million women into poverty in Nigeria by 2030.

In proliferation to the impacts of extreme weather events, Nigeria is also facing the problem of major pollution. The country is home to some of the most polluted cities in the world, such as Lagos and Port Harcourt. This pollution is causing many health problems, including respiratory diseases, cancer, and heart disease. It is also contributing to climate change.

The Nigerian government has taken some steps to address climate change, but more needs to be done. The government needs to invest in renewable energy sources and energy efficiency measures. It also needs to invest in adaptation measures to help the poor and vulnerable cope with the impacts of climate change.

We must call on the Nigerian government to take urgent action to address climate change. The future of Nigeria and its people depends on it. We must all do our part to address climate change. We can reduce our carbon footprint by driving less, using less energy, and recycling more. We can also, support businesses and organizations that are committed to sustainability.
