Challenges and Lessons Learned

Empowerment Programme -

Sourcing sufficient funding to cover the empowerment programme, and operational costs was a significant hurdle. Ensuring the programme continues beyond initial implementation also requires funding and on-going collaborations. Long-term planning to develop a sustainability plan, such as securing ongoing funding needs to be established.

Another challenge faced in 2024 was the empowerment programme we held for 100 women and girls. Transporting the women and girls to and from the venue became a logistics nightmare that required IIR to re-strategise at the last minute. IIR had to reconsider the approach of dropping off the women at the 4 pick-up points as originally planned.

It was quite challenging working with the group leaders who signed up their women to  our programme, having to turn away women who attempted to attend the event with babies and children when IIR had no facilities to cater for them was also a challenge. The above meant that a handful of women were not able to attend the programme. For future programmes, IIR will adapt training schedules to accommodate women’s responsibilities if the relevant parties are equally keen to support it.
